Dear Colleagues:
This is the sixth annual report to you, our readers, who are the major raison d’être of Hypertension. We continue to be most heartened by your words of encouragement; many of you have also supported our journal by submitting and reviewing the best manuscripts in the field of hypertension and blood pressure regulation and control.
With respect to our most recent publication statistics, we are proud and pleased to tell you that the impact factor of our journal remains the highest of all hypertension journals. The number of manuscripts submitted to us continues to increase. Last year, 1054 manuscripts were submitted to the journal; and, as of November 1, we have received 1090 papers and we conservatively anticipate receiving 1250 submissions by year’s end. We continue to maintain a very speedy initial review time of 3.9 weeks from submission to first decision and 13.7 weeks from submission to final acceptance. As you know, the first figure is probably the most pertinent for the author to assess the promptness of journal review. The latter figure reflects many other factors including the speediness of the authors to respond to the reviewers’ comments and suggestions (including the performance of additional experiments).
Special note should be made that over the past six years, we have increased the number of clinical research papers published in Hypertension so that now they comprise over one half of the manuscripts published. They are of the very best work in clinical investigation and, clearly, are on par with those papers published in our journal from the various fundamental laboratory sciences. We are also pleased that over one half of the papers submitted to Hypertension emanate from the best laboratories of countries other than the United States. The top five countries submitting papers in the past year to Hypertension are Japan, Italy, Germany, Brazil, and France. You may also be interested to know that Hypertension is now published in the Italian (and soon Spanish) language with important assistance from Lippincott, Williams & Wilkins (LWW). We are truly grateful for the constant interest and support for its invaluable assistance.
As you already know, we have been using several mechanisms to increase the number of pages in the journal for the publication of additional manuscripts. We strongly advised our authors and reviewers to reduce the length of the Materials and Methods section of their papers. To this end, we strongly urge authors to make reference in the manuscript to their previously published methods and to include a reprint for the reviewers’ information. Our editorial board does not recommend at this time that we publish a more detailed Material and Methods online. We have recently reinstituted the publication of Letters to the Editor and their respective responses on the Internet (www.hypertensionaha.org). In addition, we will soon be publishing two to three selected papers each month online only. Each of these efforts is dedicated to two important goals: publishing more manuscripts and shortening the time for publication.
It is difficult to achieve each of these goals that we have set for ourselves without making special note of the outstanding editorial support team of our office: Debby Smith, Managing Editor; Irene Hebert, Associate Managing Editor; Caramia Fairchild, Assistant Managing Editor; Annie Rivera, Assistant Managing Editor; and Nicole Le Blanc, Editorial Assistant. Without their most competent and hard-working support and pride in their journal and work, none of the positive actions would have been possible. Their contributions have not gone unnoticed by you, the authors, and readers. We all appreciate your comments.
We also want to extend our deep appreciation to Drs Donald J. DiPette and L. Gabriel Navar who have served the Council for High Blood Pressure Research and our journal well as our Special Editors for publication of the Proceedings of the Council’s Annual Fall Scientific Meetings and the proceedings of the biennial meeting of the Inter-American Society of Hypertension, respectively. As you undoubtedly know, we have markedly abbreviated the time to publication of these special issues of our journal to within four months of these respective meetings. This would not have been possible without their invaluable help and that of their committees and reviewers. We are delighted that these major international hypertension research meetings will have their proceedings available for reference in less than the eight months (or even longer) of earlier years. A word of appreciation is also due to the American Heart Association and LWW staff.
Finally, as we always do each year, we are pleased to credit the unselfish time provided to the journal and its readers by more than 900 reviewers this year for their outstanding review of submitted manuscripts. These peer reviewers from all over the world underscore our point that Hypertension, as a journal, is appreciated worldwide.

Finally, we sincerely hope that you and our readers have enjoyed our celebration of the 20th anniversary of Hypertension. Deliberate effort was made not to diminish our allotted pages for original scientific publications by including our editorial notes with this "event." We have highlighted those papers with the highest impact factors published during each of the five-year tenures of the four editorial teams. We have also featured those investigators in our field who were selected for special honors by the Council for High Blood Pressure Research and who, later, were recognized by the Nobel Committee for its prestigious Award. And, we have also featured the major leaders who have established the Council and our journal. Hopefully, this recognition was as meaningful to you as to the many who have commented to us about it. Over these 20 years, our journal has assumed a prominent position in the community of peer-reviewed journals of excellence and we look forward to our next two years to make additional gains.
