The editors have polled the Hypertension Editorial Board members for their thoughts concerning online-only publications, and a sizable majority of the board favored publishing two or three papers online only each month. However, some board members believe that most authors would prefer to have their papers in the usual print format, and these board members raised concerns about these articles being accessible online and not in print.
We now seek your opinion concerning the possibility of publishing online only. Please know that these online only papers would be listed and identified readily in the table of contents of the print journal and would be referenceable just as they would be if they appeared in print.
Before we make a final decision, we feel it is appropriate to poll our authors and readers as to your interest in online-only material. If you are in favor of it, what type of material you would like to see in this format? Would you envision online-only publications to be rapid communications, pure methodological papers, or other scientific communication, if so agreed to by each of the contributing authors of the submitted manuscripts? What other suggestions do you have for this format?
For the time being, we have instituted and renewed publication of Letters to the Editor as well as their respective responses as online-only publications. Further, in this journal issue, as an experiment of what could be published online only, we include one Methods paper by Drs Scott H. Carlson and J. Michael Wyss1 together with an introductory commentary by the authors2 indicating why they believe it is appropriate to publish in this format of communicating to you, our authors and readers of Hypertension. We are also publishing the introductory commentary for you to read in formulating your opinions.
We urgently request you, our authors and readers, to respond to the preceding question as soon as possible by faxing your views to our editorial office at (504) 842-4128 or by sending an e-mail to hypertension@comm.net. We hope to advise you within the next few months as to our decision.
