Letters to the Editor

Human Atrial Natriuretic Peptide Gene Delivery Reduces Blood Pressure in Hypertensive Rats

Kuei-Fu Lin

Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Medical University of South Carolina, Charleston, SC 29425

To the Editor:

The following letter to the editor was submitted to Hypertension on the direction of the Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Research Integrity. On receipt of Dr. Lin’s letter we forwarded it to the Office of Research Integrity, and it was found to satisfy their requirements.

Edward D. Frohlich, MD

Editor-in-Chief

Thank you for your letter of August 6, 2001, regarding an erratum to be published in Hypertension that the word "rat" be used instead of the word "rats." I apologize for the delay in requesting a correction. Because of the preparations for my wedding, I obtained approval from Ms Gall Gibbons, General Counsel of Research Integrity at the Department of Health and Human Services, for a 2-week delay to postpone the deadline of submission until July 27, 2001.

We request the correction of the statement on page 850 of the article by Lin et al1 because the results on reverse transcription–polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) of tissue extracts were obtained with only 1 control and 1 experimental rat. RT-PCR is a qualitative but not quantitative analysis indicating the sites of expression of human ANP in the animal receiving ANP gene transfer. We did not claim to use "4 animals" for each group for RT-PCR analysis throughout the entire paper.

As indicated on page 2 in the Voluntary Exclusion Agreement, "Dr. Lin states that he made honest mistakes and deeply regrets his unintentional errors in data handling." I truly did not falsify the data and am extremely sorry for making the mistakes. I apologize for any inconvenience this matter may have caused.
