- Scientific Statements: ACC/AHA Guidelines for Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (Revision of the 1993 PTCA Guidelines)—Executive Summary. The American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association Task Force on Practice Guidelines was formed to gather information and make recommendations about appropriate use of technology for the diagnosis and treatment of patients with cardiovascular disease. Percutaneous coronary interventions (PCI) are an important group of technologies in this regard. Although initially limited to PTCA, and termed percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA), PCI now includes other new techniques capable of relieving coronary narrowing. PCI is a technique that has been continually refined and modified; hence, continued, periodic guideline revision is anticipated. Second, these guidelines are to be viewed as broad recommendations to aid in the appropriate application of PCI. Product code 71-0205.
- AHA Science Advisory: Dietary Protein and Weight Reduction. This advisory provides a brief overview of the role of protein in the diet, reviews the recent popular high-protein diets, and summarizes their limitation. Guidelines for evaluating high-protein diets are provided. Product code 71-0211.
- AHA Annual Report 2001. A 4-color, 16-page annual report for the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association with features on survivors, programs, Heart & Stroke Champions, and financials. Product code 44-1043.
- Understanding and Controlling High Blood Pressure. This 46-page brochure addresses both the understanding and treatment of high blood pressure. The ranges for high, optimal, and normal blood pressure are defined. This brochure answers all the important questions, such as "What is high blood pressure, what causes it, and how can it be controlled?" This piece also details the risk factors associated with high blood pressure. Also included is a list of some of the medications used to treat high blood pressure. - Diabetes, Heart Disease, and Stroke. This 44-page brochure provides detailed information about the role diabetes plays as a risk factor for heart disease and stroke and gives advice for making lifestyle modifications to reduce that risk, including improving eating habits and increasing physical activity. The content is presented in both English and Spanish. Product code 50-1527.
- Heart and Stroke Statistical Update 2002. This 8-1/2'' x 10-3/4'' 4-color reference booklet is the definitive source for the most recent statistics, tables, and graphs on cardiovascular disease, risk factors, medical procedures/operations, and the economic cost of cardiovascular disease. - Scientific Statements: Executive Summary—ACC/AHA Guidelines for the Evaluation and Management of Chronic Heart Failure in the Adult. This paper gives evidence-based practice guidelines for the management of chronic heart failure in adults. It discusses the clinical assessment of heart failure, treatment options, treatment of special populations, concomitant disorders, and end-of-life considerations. Product code 71-0215.
- Scientific Statements: Automated External Defibrillators in Health/Fitness Facilities: A Statement for Healthcare Professionals From the Special Writing Group of the American Heart Association. This is a supplement to the AHA/ACSM Scientific Statement "Recommendations for Cardiovascular Screening, Staffing, and Emergency Policies at Health/Fitness Facilities" published in Circulation, 1998;97:2283–2293, regarding the purchase and use of automated external defibrillators in health/fitness facilities. The supplement encourages the placement and use by trained laypersons of automated external defibrillators in all health/fitness facilities. These recommendations are based on the importance of early defibrillation as a key action within a series of actions designated to reduce mortality associated with cardiac arrest. Recommendations given in this supplement are based on extensive review of the literature and consensus of the writing group. Product code 71-0222.
- Scientific Statements: Standardized Myocardial Segmentation and Nomenclature for Tomographic Imaging of the Heart. This paper gives consensus recommendations to optimize and facilitate communication between cardiac imaging modalities for research and clinical applications. Recommendations are made for the following: orientation of the heart, names for cardiac planes, number of myocardial segments, selection and thickness of cardiac slices for display and analysis, and assignment of segments to coronary artery territories.
