Preface

Thomas E. Lohmeier

Proceedings of the Council for High Blood Pressure Research, 2003

This issue of Hypertension contains selected manuscripts based on presentations made at the 57th Annual Fall Conference and Scientific Sessions of the American Heart Association Council for High Blood Pressure Research. The meeting was held in Washington, DC, September 23 through 26, 2003. The conference was preceded by the Workshop on the Insulin Resistance Syndrome and the Pathophysiology of Hypertension, Cardiovascular, and Renal Disease, which was organized by Dr Robert M. Carey. The program for the conference included 86 oral presentations and 264 posters that were selected from 492 submitted abstracts. These presentations covered a variety of topics: from genetics, molecular biology, receptors, vascular biology, signal transduction, and neurohormonal mechanisms to clinical and epidemiological aspects of hypertension. Presenters were encouraged to submit manuscripts that would be considered for publication in this proceedings issue of Hypertension. There were 117 manuscripts submitted, and 34 (29%) accepted for publication. This acceptance rate is in accordance with current American Heart Association policy for scientific journals. While it has become almost a cliche, "only the manuscripts that were highly meritorious and that required minor or no revisions were accepted for publication." Unfortunately, these rigorous criteria eliminated several potentially outstanding manuscripts that undoubtedly will be published once the authors have sufficient time to address the issues raised by the referees.

The transition to online submissions and reviews continued this year. Referee assignments and reviews were conducted electronically, and a complete evolution to online submission, processing, and reviewing of manuscripts should be in place for next year’s Supplement. Online submission has many advantages for authors and reviewers, and will be especially helpful for the Supplement by providing the best reviews in the limited time available to complete the review process. Members of the Publications Committee that contributed to the review process included Drs Italo Biaggioni, George Booz, Daniel Catanzaro, Alan Deng, Anna Dominiczak, Irene Gavras, David Harder, Edward Inscho, Carmen Hinojosa-Laborde, Margot Lapointe, Addison Taylor, Stephanie Watts, and J Michael Wyss. In addition, valuable input was provided by the editor-in chief, Dr John Hall, and the associate editors of Hypertension, Drs Celso Gomez-Sanchez, Joey Granger, Friedrich Luft, Ernesto Schiffrin, and Curt Sigmund. Most of the manuscripts were reviewed by 2 referees, a member of the Publications Committee, and either the editor or an associate editor of Hypertension. Input from the latter was especially valuable in expediting the online review process and maintaining the same high standards held for regular submissions to Hypertension.

I am grateful to all the Publications Committee members for the time and diligent efforts that they devoted to the evaluation of the submitted abstracts. I would also like to acknowledge all those who contributed to the conscientious and timely reviews of the manuscripts. Indeed, the quality of the Supplement is a reflection of their work. Their names are listed below. Finally, this Supplement would not have been possible without the dedicated support of the editorial staff of Hypertension, Gerry McAlpin, managing editor, Cindy L. Means, associate managing editor, and Paula L. Easterling, assistant managing editor. These individuals worked arduously for several weeks before and after the meeting of the Council uploading and processing abstracts, manuscripts, and manuscript reviews for the Supplement. Simply put, publication of the Supplement could not have happened without their dedicated efforts.

Several invited lectures and awards were presented at the meeting of the Council. Dr Judah Folkman received the Novartis Award for Hypertension Research; Dr Willa A. Hsueh presented the Arthur C. Corcoran Memorial Lecture; Dr Allyn A. Mark received the Irvine Page–Alva Bradley Lifetime Achievement Award; Dr Oscar H. Cingolani received the 19th Annual Aventis Pharma Hypertension Research Clinical Fellowship Program Award; and Dr Kate Denton received the Harry Goldblatt Award in Cardiovascular Research.

We will continue to strive to make this issue of Hypertension a valuable and comprehensive forum that showcases the latest developments and advances in the field of hypertension research. To this end, changes have and will continue to be made in the publication of outstanding peer-reviewed research articles. We solicit and encourage your articles and your input into the review process.
