This issue of Hypertension contains selected manuscripts from the 59th Annual Fall Conference and Scientific Sessions of the Council for High Blood Pressure Research in association with the Council on the Kidney in Cardiovascular Disease. There were 94 submitted manuscripts, and 21 (22%) were accepted. The timeline for submission of the current issue was extended owing to Hurricane Katrina and the devastating impact it had on a number of our major contributing institutions. Of the manuscripts included in this issue, 3 are from the special honored lectures of the Council for High Blood Pressure Research, namely, the 2 Novartis awardees, Kenneth E. Bernstein, MD, and Barry M. Brenner, MD (Figure 1), and Corcoran Lecturer, Carlos M. Ferrario, MD (Figure 2).

The Novartis Award was presented to Barry M. Brenner for pioneering the concept that inhibition of the renin-angiotensin system provides renal protection. Kenneth E. Bernstein received the Novartis Award for seminal discoveries on the renin-angiotensin system that have had a profound impact on the field of hypertension.
The Irvine Page-Alva Bradley Lifetime Achievement Award, sponsored by Monarch Pharmaceuticals, was presented to Alberto Nasjletti, MD for lifetime achievements in the field of hypertension (Figure 3).

I would like to thank all of the referees, acknowledged on the next page, who contributed their time and energy in providing timely review of the manuscripts. I also thank the members of the Publications Committee for their dedicated work in evaluating the manuscripts and Gerry McAlpin, Managing Editor, for her assistance in processing the manuscripts and preparing this issue for publication.
This will be the last edition of the Council Supplement to be published through the Publications Committee of the Council for High Blood Pressure. From now on this task will be the responsibility of the Hypertension Editorial Office. The Leadership Committee believes that keeping the submission and publishing processes at the Hypertension Editorial Office will permit a more efficient review process and allow the special Council Supplement to be published in a timely manner as well as to assure consistency of the review from year to year.
The role of the Publications Committee will change, and a new charge given. What this new charge will be has yet to be decided; however, this topic is currently being discussed by the Executive Committee of the Council, American Heart Association, and the chair of the Publications Committee. We have discussed some very exciting possibilities that will be forthcoming in future issues of Hypertension and Council News letters. On behalf of the Publications Committee and me, it has been an honor to be involved in the publication of the Council supplement. The Publications Committee will continue to be involved in the supplement; the chair of the Publications Committee will serve as a consulting editor of Hypertension, and the Publication Committee members will still be involved in the reviewing of manuscripts and grading of abstracts.
