*Introduction

The present issue of Hypertension contains selected manuscripts based on presentations made at the XVIIth Scientific Meeting of the Inter-American Society of Hypertension (IASH). The meeting was held from May 6 through 10, 2007, in Miami, Fla. The IASH meetings were cosponsored by the Consortium for Southeastern Hypertension Control (COSEHC), a national organization dedicated to reducing the risk of hypertension-related diseases of the heart and the blood vessels in the southeastern US. The conference program included state-of-the-art lectures and 336 abstract presentations. These presentations covered a variety of topics ranging from molecular genetics and vascular biology to clinical and epidemiological aspects of hypertension. On behalf of all the IASH members, I congratulate the meeting organizers, Drs Carlos M. Ferrario and Leopoldo Raij, for organizing a highly successful and informative scientific meeting.

Participants of the IASH meeting were encouraged to submit manuscripts for publication in this proceedings issue of Hypertension. Most of the manuscripts were reviewed by 2 referees and the editors. There were 60 manuscripts submitted, and 14 (23%) accepted for publication. Because of budget and time constraints, only the manuscripts that were highly meritorious and that required minor or no revisions were accepted. Unfortunately, many excellent manuscripts could not be published in the supplement.

Online submissions and reviews were utilized to improve the efficiency of the review process. The editors of Hypertension were especially valuable this year in expediting the online review process and maintaining the same high standards held for regular submissions to Hypertension. I want to thank the Editor-in-Chief, Dr John E. Hall, and the associate editors of Hypertension, Drs Celso E. Gomez-Sanchez, Friedrich C. Luft, Curt D. Sigmund, and Ernesto L. Schiffrin, for their efforts in producing this supplement in a timely and efficient manner.

I would also like to thank all of the referees who contributed to the conscientious and timely reviews of the manuscripts. The referees who have contributed to this supplement are listed below. Finally, this supplement would not have been possible without the dedicated support of the editorial staff of Hypertension: Gerry McAlpin, managing editor; Stephanie Allbritton, Renata Gil; and Cindy Dube.

A number of awards were presented at the IASH meeting. We would like to congratulate Dr Alberto Nasjletti for receiving the 2007 IASH Lifetime Achievement Award. Drs Vera de Moura Azevedo Farah and Katie DeAngelis from Sao Paulo, Brazil, received the IASH New Investigator Award. A grant of $25,000 received from the American Heart Association Council for High Blood Pressure Research supported 35 merit-based young investigator travel awards. Additionally, IASH provided travel support for another 11 young investigators, and COSEHC provided in-kind funding in program development and continuing medical education accreditation.

In closing, I hope that the Proceedings of the Inter-American Society of Hypertension continues to be a valuable and comprehensive forum that showcases the latest advances in the field of hypertension research not only from Latin and North America, but from other countries throughout the world.
