Abstract--In addition to its role in modulating blood pressure and fluid volume, the activity of the renin-angiotensin system has been implicated in numerous other functions, including memory, kidney development, and the function of the heart and lungs. The latest breakthroughs in this area have focused on a recently discovered member of the renin-angiotensin system, the enzyme angiotensin-converting enzyme 2, and on the peptide product of its action on angiotensin II, angiotensin 1-7. This review will highlight recent advances made in understanding the biochemistry and physiology of angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 and angiotensin 1-7 and their potential roles in cardiovascular pathophysiology.
