Abridged Version of Specifications for Digital Art

Note: If you are unable to size your digital art appropriately or provide the correct resolution, we encourage you to send a PDF created from the original source file of the figure (i.e. In the program that created the figure, 1) go to your print menu, 2) change printer to Adobe PDF, and 3) save file as the MS #-Fig 1, etc.).

Below is a list of applications that are best suited for image assembly. The list is broken into three separate categories; beside each category is the suggested file format.

Please Note: An image should be saved and submitted in the size at which it will be printed. For optimal results, scaling, rotation, cropping should be done using an image editing program, rather than a page layout program.

Multipanel figures. Make sure that any multipanel figures (i.e., figures with parts labeled a, b, c, d, etc.) are assembled into one file. Rather than sending four files (Fig1a, Fig1b, Fig1c, Fig1d) the four parts should be assembled into one piece and supplied as one file.

Scanned Images. Before placing images in programs like Illustrator, FreeHand, Canvas or CorelDRAW the images should be checked for the following:
